Apr ‘24 BOTS: Uncommon Accountability

April’s Book on the Shelf

Title: Uncommon Accountability
Author(s): Brian P. Moran and Michael Lennington

Dimensions of Well-being: Emotional, Occupational, Social

Take-aways: Accountability is a mindset, one that is based on free-will. By believing that you “get to” do what life offers instead of “having to” deal with your circumstances, you take ownership of your choices, and ultimately, your results. This permeates everything we do, from our physical health, to our leadership abilities, and even our financial success.

You'll LOVE this book if: You are looking for a shift in your mindset to unlock more potential in your health, career, and relationships, and you appreciate supporting evidence and engaging anecdotes that make it feel right.

DON'T read if: You think changing your mindset isn’t an adequate first step in changing your results, or you don’t feel you are ready to challenge your own assumptions of yourself and your circumstances.

Reasons I love this book: I picked up this book when a good friend of mine, who happens to be a very analytically minded business coach, said I might like it. He bought it for me, and in the cover, he wrote “I’m not even 1/2 way thru this book but I hear your voice in it".” And boy was he right.

Following my philosophies, you probably know that my first step in helping others succeed is to change their mindset (if our thoughts occur 60,000 times a day, and 80% are negative, wouldn’t YOU want to start there?). So when I opened up this book, and it jumps right into personal responsibility, I’m all ears.

“At the heart of accountability is free-will choice. You always, always, always have choice. - Uncommon Accountability, p. 12

This book has a powerful message. Our life is dictated by our choices. In order to improve our circumstances, we need to stay accountable to the things in life we hold most dear. While our environment and our relationships are powerful influences, if we fall into a Victim Mindset and blame those external factors, we reduce our ability to control our own future.

This book takes a dive into how to shift your mentality to one that takes ownership, and thus responsibility, of our personal success. It shares anecdotes of how others have improved many facets of their lives, from physical health, to careers, financial gains, and constructive relationships at work and home. It also shares how to use accountability to empower your team through “A Culture of Capability.

If you feel your mindset has gotten the better of you (and it does us all), and you want to find ways to pull yourself up, shift your thinking, and take responsibility this day forward, I encourage you to pick up this book.
